5 Brain Improvement Tips for Salespeople

“My brain? That’s my second favorite organ,” so said Woody Allen. In sales, you need your brain to be sharp to help you win deals and beat your goals.

Let’s face it: you’re always on your feet needing to weave and dodge objectives, quickly assess the customer’s needs and make a strong impression. To do this, and do it well, your brain needs to be in peak condition!

The good news for salespeople is that science has developed a way to keep your brain super sharp.

Using a few simple exercises, brain scientists believe you can work to grow new brain cells and keep your memory sharp. You can work these rituals into your daily sales life.  And who in sales doesn’t want to be smarter and have a leg up on the competition? (Of course our amazing sales app Spiro is specifically designed to help salespeople work smarter and more efficient to make the most money possible.)

Here’s how you do it:

1) Celebrate your Small Successes

When you close a huge deal that you’ve been working all year towards, you are obviously going to celebrate.

My team has a special bottle of Scotch that we drink when we hit certain sales milestones. But don’t wait for those big wins to applaud yourself.  Instead, praise yourself for the little stuff as well, because those small wins are just as important for the brain.

And start early in the day to set the mood right. (And no, I’m not talking about drinking here.) Get right on the phone in the morning and bang out 10 calls. No matter the results, still praise yourself for making those 10 connections.

2) Laugh More

When you exercise, your heart rate is raised, which in turn pumps more oxygen-rich blood to our brains at a faster rate. This is very beneficial for brain cell growth,  but if you don’t have time to go for a 30 minute jog at lunch, then try laughing.

Laughter has similar positive effects on our mental state, as a good belly roar increases oxygen to the brain. So, how can you incorporate humor into your sales day? Easy! Check out the Sales Humor page on Facebook, or even try one of Spiro’s funny personalities.

3) Use it or Lose it

You’ve heard this slogan applied to many things and also applies to your brain. You need to exercise your brain to help prevent memory loss.

Try learning something new – take 10 minutes before your next sales call and read up on the latest research in your field. Not only will you keep your brain sharp, but you’ll have more interesting things to say to your prospect.

4) Look the Part

Appearance is a big part of the sales game. If you walk into a room self-assured and have a firm handshake, people are going to listen to you and believe in what you have to say.

The interesting part of all this is that acting and looking powerful will actually make you feel powerful. For instance, slumping over at your desk, not only makes you look helpless, but your brain then also starts to become predisposed towards weakness.

So get a bit of swagger in your sales step. Sit up straight, shoulders back, think positive, and close that next big deal.

5) Get Some Sleep

I hate having a sleepless night on a red-eye and heading straight into a sales meeting – I’m just not functioning at 100%. Shut-eye would have helped, but why?

Sleep gives your brain time to clean itself of something called beta-amyloid. And you don’t want this building up in your brain, as clumps of it have been found in people with dementia and Alzheimer’s.

So, want to get more Zs and still be crushing your quota? Then seek out ways to be more efficient and effective in your sales game, leaving you more time for a good night’s sleep!
